Back-to-School with AAC: Helping Every Child Start the School Year with Confidence.

The start of a new school year brings excitement, new routines, and new opportunities to learn. For children who use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), going back to school can also bring unique challenges.

As Logan's mom, I've learned that a little preparation can make a big difference. Whether your child uses an AAC device, communication boards, sign language, gestures, or another way to communicate, every child deserves to feel included, understood, and successful.

5 Tips for a Successful School Year

1. Practice using AAC before school starts.

   Spend time using communication during everyday activities so your child feels comfortable expressing wants, needs, and feelings.

   
   

2. Share information with teachers and therapists.

   Help them understand how your child communicates and what strategies work best.

   
   

3. Create visual routines.

   Visual schedules and first/then boards can make transitions easier and reduce anxiety.

   
   

4. Celebrate every success.

   Every new word, button press, sign, or communication attempt is something to celebrate.

   
   

5. Remember that communication looks different for everyone.

   Speech isn't the only way to communicate. Every voice deserves to be heard, no matter how it is expressed.
